Una de las primeras sectas del Islam en creer en el aplazamiento del juicio de aquellos que han cometido graves pecados, reconociendo que sólo Dios es capaz de decidir si un musulmán ha perdido su fe.

Florecieron durante los s. VII–VIII, período de rivalidad en la comunidad musulmana. A diferencia de los jariyíes, una secta militante que deseaba expulsar de la comunidad a los grandes pecadores y declararles la yihad, los Murjiʾah, quienes preconizaban dejar en manos de Dios a esos pecadores, argumentaban que nadie que había profesado el Islam podía ser declarado un infiel. Cuando los jariyíes se rebelaron contra la dinastía omeya, los Murjiah declararon que esa sublevación contra un gobernante musulmán no podía justificarse bajo ninguna circunstancia. Fueron moderados y enfatizaron el amor y la bondad de Dios.
